10 Executive Leadership Programs to Develop Executive Leader
Mike Malefakis, Wharton's executive education CEO and associate vice-dean, adds, "The whole saying, 'It's lonely at the top,' is true." Malefakis realizes this reality, but he also believes in the importance of executive education.
Business leadership training for executive leader development
These programs allow you to network, learn, and grow with other C-suite executives. The sessions refresh your leadership techniques, and some even provide a break from your regular job routine.
Many of the country's best business schools offer executive-specific courses and programs that fit around busy executives' schedules. Below are ten executive leadership management programs (some all-online, hybrid, or all-in-person) geared toward the C-suite, including risk management, competition, and brand reputation.
The University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School
Long workdays in the C-suite imply little time for thinking and learning from others. "That's why the five weeks are critical," Malefakis says, "to practically take a sabbatical from what you're doing daily and invest in yourself."
During the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania's five-week on-campus Advanced Management Program, you'll attend breakout sessions, simulations, and experiential learning (think: team rowing exercises to build communication and coordination) with fellow executives. You'll walk away with a framework for pausing, reflecting, learning, and acting in future business situations.
The Graduate School of Business at Stanford University
The Stanford Graduate School of Business's Black Leaders Program is designed for Black business leaders or those who want to grow in their careers as Black leaders. For two weeks, it comprises live online seminars on race and leadership, power, negotiations, relationships, communication, and networking.
The meeting also provides a forum for discussing impediments to leadership and workplace Black identity. You'll work on a capstone project centered on professional growth with peer mentoring and evaluation following the sessions. Brian S. Lowery, the program's director, studies how people perceive unfairness and how to address it.
Sloan School of Management at MIT
Before you begin Closing the Gap Between Strategy and Execution, a three-day online course, you'll take a survey to determine whether your company has been successful with strategy execution and identify areas for development. The MIT Sloan School of Management's strategy execution course is taught from the perspective that risk management is more critical than implicit beliefs in strategy implementation.
You'll apply insights gained in the class, which approaches strategy as a cyclical process, to scenarios from your own business experiences. Donald Sull dubbed a management guru by Fortune, is leading the course aimed at leaders of organizations with at least $30 million in annual revenue.
Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management
Kellogg's yearlong Women's Senior Leadership Program offers four three-day workshops focused on decision-making, negotiating skills, ethical challenges, and external management for top female executives. The 360-degree assessment provided by Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management is the program's crown jewel, giving feedback on your leadership style that is devoid of prejudice from your firm.
It's explicitly designed to evaluate women's leadership qualities while also considering your unique circumstances. Check-ins with leadership consultants are available throughout the year to help you define growth goals and track your success. CEOs, CFOs, CMOs, and presidents of companies are among the program's graduates.
Dartmouth College's Tuck School of Business
Dartmouth's two-week on-campus Advanced Management Program delves further into strategy, competition, globalization, and brand management. The Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College offers a robust combination of lectures, seminars, excursions, and workshops. You'll also work on a management action plan project that you'll present to your boss.
Projects could be aimed at resolving corporate issues or identifying new growth prospects. "At the end of the day, it's really all about impact," says Phil Barta, executive director of Tuck Executive Education at Dartmouth. "That's what these organizations are looking to see from their leaders when they send them."
Darden School of Business, University of Virginia
The Darden School of Business at the University of Virginia hosts the Executive Program, which comprises in-person and online modules on topics ranging from strategy to personal wellness, entrepreneurship, and risk management. Although all of the participants in this six-month program are senior executives, they come from various industries, including finance, government, education, health care, and even aerospace.
"You open your mind to different ways of doing things and how people live and think," says Elton "Neil" Wright Jr., a program quality executive with Boeing who participated in the program, adding that TEP gave him a better sense of the world economy. Throughout two two-week courses, you'll meet in person.
Harvard Business School is a prestigious business school in the United.
Risk Management for Corporate Leaders: From Compliance to Competitive Advantage, a weeklong in-person course offered by Harvard Business School, teaches participants how to predict and mitigate risk, as well as how to use risk management for strategy and competitive advantage.
For executives ranging from chief risk officers to chief financial officers, it covers both internal (employee behavior and strategy execution) and external risk management (uncontrollable occurrences and reputation). Previous participants have included Johnson & Johnson, Netflix, and Accenture executives. According to Harvard, multiple firm representatives should attend the training simultaneously.
The Yale School of Management is a prestigious business school.
The Yale School of Management's 10-month Global Executive Leadership Program is divided into three five-week modules, with intermissions for participants to implement what they've learned at their various firms. You'll attend four boot camps focused on personal insights, marketing, negotiations, entrepreneurship, and one-on-one executive coaching as part of the GELP program.
You'll also be invited to Yale's CEO Summit, which gathers top executives worldwide. You'll be a Yale alum once you've completed the program. "They are ready for big thoughts, big changes, and exciting new initiatives," Jeffrey Sonnenfeld, faculty director of the program, says of attendees.
Columbia Business School is a prestigious business school in New York.
You have a strategic perspective, natural leadership skills, and a solid understanding of finance fundamentals, but numbers aren't your strong suit or career emphasis. Is there a way out? The five-day Finance and Accounting for the Nonfinancial Executive course at Columbia Business School covers managerial and financial accounting, ratio computation, forecasting and valuation, and shareholder value management and is geared toward creative or technical executives.
This course can also be used as a refresher for those who previously worked in finance or accounting but have since changed careers. In most cases, around one-third of the participants are in general management positions.
Graziadio Business School at Pepperdine University
Participants will study both virtual and in-person approaches to engage stakeholders, recruit, and solve challenges strategically via the lens of VUCA during Pepperdine University's (Graziadio) three-day, six-session Executive Leadership Essentials certificate program (volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity).
Participants will be given the opportunity to complete a 360 Leadership Assessment, which will allow them to reflect on their own leadership abilities. During the last session, attendees receive a bespoke leadership development plan tailored directly to your firm.
